We, judging those men to be worthy of honor and preference
who are gifted with genius and talent and the utmost of that
strength that always has been
esteemed by the ancients [the Romans] and
the moderns, that is, the power of Architecture founded upon arithmetic
and geometry,
which, as foremost among the seven liberal arts, and as depending upon
exact science, require profound knowledge and great ability, and are
therefore highly appreciated by us; and we, having sought
everywhere, but particularly in greater
Tuscany, the fountain of architects,
without finding any one really conversant and skillful in that profession, and
having lately heard by report, and since ascertained by full experience,
the learning and attainments of the distinguished Messer Lutiano, bearer
of this gift, and instructed in this art; and, further, we, having resolved to erect in our city of Urbino a
beautiful residence, in all respects befitting the rank and praiseworthy
reputation of our
predecessors and our own standing, have, for these causes, selected the said
Messer Lutiano as engineer and chief of all those employed upon that
wall-building, as Masters of construction Peter and Masters of Woodorking,
and building, and all other persons of any rank....

Quelli huomini noi giudicamo clever essere honorati, et commendati, li
quali si trovano esser ornati d'ingegno e di virtu et max. di queue virtu

virtu dell'Architettura fondata in l'arte dell'aritmetica e geometria, che
